Sweet Snacks
International pop trio (UK, US, France) Sweet Snacks was born out of the unlikely meeting between three musical genies (MC Twinkie, MC Ladyfinger, MC Bon Bon). Exploding out of their bottles they have written over 200 songs and have enjoyed several collaborative efforts with modern pop superstars. 80's hit maker of "Whip it" fame, Jerry Casale of DEVO, is featured on their controversial dance track "Illuminati" as well as on their lushly orchestrated homage to nanotechnology, "Nano a Nano." The darling cosmic gem of a track, "UFO", features the young bluegrass sensations, Hot Buttered Rum in a riveting encounter of the third kind.
The band's musical themes range from cosmonauts to ping pong champions, from the halls of secret society to kung pow chicken in your face. They Choose China

Shui-Bo Wang was a teenager in Eastern China when he saw his first Westerner, a man riding a green bicycle. “He could have been from outer space,” he says, so cut off was China from the rest of the world during the Cold War. The man on the bicycle was James Veneris, a former American POW who, at the close of the Korean War in 1954, refused repatriation and instead decided to call China for a home. He was one of 22 POWs, including one Briton, to do so.
The award-winning documentary They Chose China features never-before-seen footage from the Chinese camps as well as interviews with former POWs and their families, to tell the fascinating stories of these forgotten American dissidents. Refuting the accusations that these “turncoats” were brainwashed during their internment, Wang reveals a story of individuals who, out of loathing for McCarthy's America, chose to live among a people with a mutual respect and appreciation for peace until the tide turned with the Cultural Revolution.
Oscar-nominated director Shui-bo Wang will be present for a Q&A session after the screening.
China is Far Away

Throughout China’s shared history with Italy, even with Europe, only a few names are well remembered. Marco Polo, Matteo Rici, and Giuseppe Gastiglione are all names long since buried in the past, but the name of filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni still lives within China’s cinematic mind. Antonioni’s four-hour film Chung Kuo – Cina was initially denounced as anti-China propaganda upon its release in 1972, despite it’s initial approval by the Party, and all of his subsequent works were banned in China until 2004.
Paying homage to Antonioni’s enduring connection to China, director Liu Haiping’s China is Far Away retraces the Italian filmmaker’s steps as the first foreign filmmaker allowed in China during the Cultural Revolution. Silent shots of Beijing from the 1970s are juxtaposed with the words and images of Antonioni as he recalls his experiences in China and the memories he has long since held in his heart and mind.
Director Liu Haiping will also be present for a Q&A session after the screening.

Columbia University's Louis Armstrong Jazz Band
Alexander Moll grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he studied
jazz and classical guitar privately with Dan Sumner and John Rankin.
He attended the jazz conservatory division of the New Orleans Center
for the Creative Arts (NOCCA) high school, where he worked with
clarinetist Alvin Batiste, pianist Michael Pellera, guitarist David
Mooney, and many others. The NOCCA group performed at the 2007
Marciac Jazz Festival and the 2007 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage
Festival. Alex is now a second year undergraduate student and an
active member of the Columbia Jazz Program, where he composes for a
quintet under the direction of pianist Ben Waltzer. The son of two
mathematicians, he is majoring in mathematics and is studying
Princeton music theorist Dmitri Tymoczko's work on "The Geometry of
Musical Chords."
Kevin Hsieh, a second year undergraduate at Columbia University,
started his studies on upright bass and began listening to and playing
jazz in high school. He has proven to be a quick learner, moving to
New York and immediately playing around the City's competitive jazz
scene, appearing as a sideman at venues such as the Garage,
Cleopatra's Needle, and the iconic Smalls Jazz Club. New York has
proven to be a great learning experience for him, allowing him to work
with musicians such as Don Sickler, Gene Jackson, Steve Wilson, Jon
Batiste, Grant Stewart, Jon Irabagon, and Bertha Hope and playing
alongside musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Walter Blanding, Victor
Goines, Dan Nimmer, and Kurt Rosenwinkel.
A critically acclaimed saxophonist, Ole Mathisen is an active
performer on the New York and the international jazz scene. In
addition, he steadily works as a studio musician, composer, arranger,
and producer. Over the years he has been involved with classical,
jazz, electronic, ethnic, and experimental music, and he draws heavily
on his wealth of musical experience when composing. He is currently a
member of the Jazz Performance Faculty at Columbia University. Ole has
worked on more than 80 albums, composed several film and TV scores,
and has performed and/ or recorded with: Paula Cole, Louie Vega, Omar
Hakim, Darryl Jones, Hiram Bullock, William Kennedy, Tom Coster, Mark
Egan, Steve Smith, Mino Cinelu, Peter Erskine, Eddie Gomez, Badal Roy,
Rufus Reid, Ron Carter, Grady Tate, Claudio Roditi, Will Lee, LaVerne
Baker, Abraham Laboriel Sr, Abraham Laboriel Jr, Randy Brecker,
Kenwood Dennard, Gil Goldstein, Lew Soloff, Tiger Okoshi, Michael
Gibbs, Harvie Swartz, Jon Christensen, Gary Husband, Cyro Batista,
Bill Bruford, Kenny Barron, Bob Moses, Jeff Berlin, Hilton Ruiz, Adam
Nussbaum, Raphael, Frankie Valli, Mamak Khadem, Keiko Lee, and Dream
Theater.
He is the leader of CHINESE HOROSCOPE, and a member of NYNDK, SYOTOS,
Afromantra, and Mamak Khadem Ensemble. Ole received his Bachelor
Degree in Professional Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston,
graduating summa cum laude in 1988. While at Berklee he studied for
three years with renowned saxophone guru Joe Viola. He moved to New
York in 1993 and received a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance from
Manhattan School of Music in 1995, studying saxophone with Bob
Mintzer, arranging with Maria Schneider, and film scoring with Ed
Green.
Chris Washburne is one of those rare musicians whose musical
activities cross many styles and cultural borders. He has received
rave reviews for his jazz and classical performances as well as being
called "one of the best trombonists in New York" by The New York Times
and he was voted as a "Rising Star of the Trombone" in the 2008
Downbeat Critic's Poll. Brad Walseth of JazzChicago.net writes that
Chris "is perhaps the most important trombonist performing today"
(2006). Chris has toured extensively with various groups and
concertized throughout the Europe, North, South, and Central Americas,
Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. He has commissioned and premiered
over twenty contemporary compositions for trombone and has performed
on over 150 recordings, 17 of which have won Grammy's. He leads his
own band SYOTOS, one of the busiest and most in demand Latin jazz
groups in New York. Their release "Paradise In Trouble" on Jazzheads
Records was nominated as the best Latin jazz record of 2004. He
co-leads NYNDK, a Trans-Atlantic jazz collective bringing together
musicians from New York (NY), Norway (N), and Denmark (DK), uniting
three places that have significant roles in jazz history. Established
in 2003, its founding members are Danish pianist Soren Moller,
Norwegian saxophonist Ole Mathisen, and American trombonist Chris
Washburne. Our decision to form this collaboration was inspired by our
own experiences of the truly international nature of jazz. NYNDK
brings to the mix a combination of refined Scandinavian cool with
aggressive New York heat spiced with a progressive postmodern
sensibility. Last year the members of the NYNDK were awarded a
prestigious DaNY Arts Grant from the Danish Cultural Ministry, a grant
set up to forge international collaboration among artists in New York
and Denmark. Their 2008 release "Nordic Disruption" on Jazzheads

Schuller, among many others. Chris is an associate professor of
ethnomusicology at Columbia University and the founder and Director of
Columbia's Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program. His academic work
includes the publication of numerous articles on jazz, Latin jazz, and
salsa. His book, Sounding Salsa: Performing Latin Music In New York
City, was published in 2008 by Temple University Press. He is the
co-editor of a volume entitled Bad Music on Routledge Press (2004).
